Destination Ghana – Pim
Pim grew up in Mechelen with a foster family that later adopted her. Her biological mother struggled with a mental illness and, as a teenager, gave Pim a letter containing her biological father’s name and phone number. She also received a postcard from a man in Ghana. At the time, she paid no attention to it, content with the life she had.
Now, as an adult, she is facing an identity crisis. She wants to understand where she comes from, how she ended up in a foster family, what happened to her parents, and why her father could not raise her himself. With only the old letter and the postcard as clues, she seeks help from a friend and filmmaker, Adams Mensah, who has Ghanaian roots and experience with similar stories.
Their search begins with her adoptive parents in Mechelen and leads them to Ghana, where her father comes from. It becomes a journey into her origins, her family, and the hope of finally discovering her true identity.

The term intercountrian is a contra trem as a response to racialized labels such as “Black” or “White,” which often carry reductive or stigmatizing connotations when used to describe people of complex identities and cultural heritage. Intercountrian offers a more neutral, culturally focused alternative. – Adams Mensah

In Intercountrians we follow four people from the African diaspora, who all live in a different continent (Europe, USA, Asia and Australia). All four have a different life story, but there is also something that connects them: none of them have ever set foot on the African continent. They decided to travel to Ghana for the first time in search of their roots and to experience what it feels like be in an African country. They want to know what “home” means to them and whether they feel more at home in a country where everyone looks like them, where they experience less racism and discrimination, and where they can finally feel like themselves.

Ghana For You
Filmmaker and actor Adams Mensah returns to Ghana, the country where he was born and where he spent half of his life. Together with Belgian and Ghanaian friends, he travels through Ghana and tries to find out why Ghanaians want to leave their country. What do they miss in Ghana and are they aware of the personal and social consequences of migration? Starting from his own personal experiences, Adams tries to find answers and explanations. A road trip to learn more about Ghana, its inhabitants and himself.

Me a Belgian, my mother a Ghanaian
At 14 years of age Adams travels to Belgium to live with his father, leaving his mother behind in Ghana. Three years later his mother had a stroke. As a young boy he wasn’t able to offer any help for his sick mother. This brought guilt upon him and he could not hold the psychological burden for years. Six years later after the incident, Adams returns to Ghana in search of his sick mother and to seek answers to what contributed to his mother’s present state of health whilst he was away. This becomes an emotional, psychological and spiritual journey he could never have planned for.

His aunt is really bitter and jealous because as a child Ellen got everything she could only dream of. The film premiered on September 9, 2011 at Cinema Zuid in Antwerp and was then screened for two weeks at the Filmhuis Klappei.
