In Destination Ghana we follow four people from the African diaspora, who all live in a different continent (Europe, USA, Asia and Australia). All four have a different life story, but there is also something that connects them: none of them have ever set foot on the African continent. They decided to travel to the african cotintent for the first time in search of their roots . They want to know what “home” means to them and whether they feel more at home in a country where everyone looks like them, where they experience less racism and discrimination, and where they can finally feel like themselves.

What do they miss in Ghana and are they aware of the personal and social consequences of migration? Starting from his own personal experiences, Adams tries to find answers and explanations. A road trip to learn more about Ghana, its inhabitants and himself.

Me a Belgian, my mother a Ghanaian
At 14 years of age Adams travels to Belgium to live with his father, leaving his mother behind in Ghana. Three years later his mother had a stroke. As a young boy he wasn’t able to offer any help for his sick mother. This brought guilt upon him and he could not hold the psychological burden for years. Six years later after the incident, Adams returns to Ghana in search of his sick mother and to seek answers to what contributed to his mother’s present state of health whilst he was away. This becomes an emotional, psychological and spiritual journey he could never have planned for.

Genade lives with his mother Ellen. When his mother dies after a heart attack, his aunt Stella and her son Justin moves in with him. His aunt is really bitter and jealous because as a child Ellen got everything she could only dream of. Now Genade and his cousin attends the same school, but how does Stella react when history threatens to repeat itself?

The film premiered on September 9, 2011 at Cinema Zuid in Antwerp and was then screened for two weeks at the Filmhuis Klappei.
